Different kinds of support

  • Practical help (e.g. helping the person to prevent relapse, providing lifts to the doctor or help with the housework if they are ill).
  • Information or suggestions (e.g. discussing information about the illness or resources with the person).
  • Companionship (e.g. talking things through or doing enjoyable things together).
  • Emotional support (e.g. reassuring the person that you care or believe in them).
  • Non-verbal support (e.g. listening to the person, helping to monitor symptoms or providing physical affection if appropriate).
